Follow-Up

A follow-up appointment is included to ensure fit and comfort.

The lifespan of orthotics should not be measured by when the cover material wears out but by how long the orthotics meets the foot’s changing needs for support, correction and pressure redistribution.

If your symptoms begin to return it is a good idea to have your orthotics reassessed to determine if modifications or a new device are necessary.

Tips

  • The effectiveness of a Custom foot orthotic is maximized in footwear that fits properly and is appropriate to the individual and their lifestyle.

  • Custom Orthotics for patients under the age of 5 are not as common, due to the fact that many of the skeletal or soft tissue injuries that require treatment with custom made orthotics do not present until a person is older, but when they do require early treatment a prescription by a medical doctor, or Pediatric specialist who is regulated in providing global diagnosis of the patient may be indicated.

  • A custom orthotic is only as good as the shoe it goes into as the shoe provides the foundation for the orthotic. If your orthotic does not have a proper foundation it will not be able to function properly.

  • When you see our Specialist for your fitting take your shoes with you to ensure they are suitable for orthotics.

  • Initially, a new pair of orthotics may feel intrusive and it may take you a few weeks to get accustomed to it. We often recommend you wear your new orthotics for an hour on the first day. Each subsequent day, you should gradually increase the amount of wear time by one hour.

  • A orthotic should never be painful to wear. If your orthotics becomes painful, or you feel that you cannot get used to it,  stop wearing it and contact us. We will adjust the orthotic to make it more comfortable.
